Christmas in Cefalù 2026: Magico Natale, Nativity Scenes, New Year and Epiphany

Cefalù celebrates Christmas for about a month, roughly from December 6 to January 6. Nearly everything is free and most of it is outdoors, and the best parts are the town's own traditions: Ninnaredda carols and bagpipers in the old lanes, the Via dei Presepi nativity trail, a sea dip on Christmas Eve, Midnight Mass in the Norman cathedral and a free New Year's Eve party in Piazza Duomo.

Cefalù is also a good base for the big Christmas events nearby: Castelbuono's sweets festival, Gangi's living nativity and Palermo's Christmas markets.

The Comune di Cefalù had not released the 2026/27 Magico Natale program on October 22, 2026. Dates and times marked as 2025 come from the 2025/26 edition, so use them to plan, not to book. Recent programs came out in late November or early December, and we will update this page when this one does.

This guide is part of our Cefalù in winter (November–February) series, which covers the weather, opening hours and day trips for the whole season.

Key facts: Christmas in Cefalù

  • Festival: Magico Natale a Cefalù, the town council's program
  • Usual dates: December 6 to January 6 (the 2025/26 edition ran December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026)
  • Price: free for all council-run events
  • 2026/27 status: not yet published on October 22, 2026
  • Patron feast: the Immacolata, December 8 (a Tuesday in 2026)
  • Nativity trail: La Via dei Presepi and the Mostra Diocesana dei Presepi, December 8 to January 6 in 2025/26
  • Traditions: the Ninnaredda carol, ciaramelle bagpipers, the Vecchia Strina (December 31), the Re Magi horseback parade (January 6)
  • Hardest days for getting around: December 25 and January 1
  • Nearest airport: Palermo (PMO): bus to Palermo Centrale, then the train to Cefalù
  • Best for: couples, families with young children, culture and food lovers; not for anyone after a big New Year's club night

Castelbuono and the Madonie villages are the classic Christmas outing from Cefalù, for the sweets, the markets and the cold mountain air. Without a car, the From Cefalù: Sicilian Villages & Ricotta with Lunch & Wine day is the easiest way up. It is rated 4.7 from 57 reviews and started from $70 per person when we checked. Many small operators take a break on December 24–26 and December 31 to January 1, so check the calendar for your dates.

Is Cefalù worth visiting at Christmas?

Yes, if you want atmosphere more than spectacle. You won't find snow or rows of Alpine-style wooden chalets. You will find a UNESCO-listed Norman cathedral lit up above a piazza with a Christmas tree, brass bands and bagpipers working their way through the lanes, dozens of nativity scenes in churches and shop windows, and a quiet seafront. Almost every council event is free. The summer crowds have gone home, and on a sunny afternoon a light jacket is often enough for a beach walk.

Who will love it: couples, families with children under 12 (there is a Santa's House, parades and children's theater), food lovers, and anyone who enjoys local traditions. Who should go elsewhere: anyone who wants big-city New Year nightlife, or needs a guaranteed beach day.

Our verdict: if you can choose, come for December 20–27. In 2025 that week had the Ninnaredda evenings, the historical parade on December 22, the Christmas Eve dip and Midnight Mass, and the start of Gangi's living nativity on December 26. If you can't make it, December 29 to January 1 is our second choice, for the Vecchia Strina and the New Year party.

Other experiences you might enjoy

Christmas in Cefalù pairs well with a food and wine tour of the old town in pastry season, a Sicilian cooking class on a wet afternoon, a day in Castelbuono and the Madonie, and the mosaics of Monreale and the Christmas markets of Palermo. When is Magico Natale a Cefalù 2026?

The 2026 dates haven't been announced yet. The last two editions ran:

  • 2024/25: December 7, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
  • 2025/26: December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026; the Comune published the program on December 1, 2025.

So expect roughly December 6, 2026, to January 6, 2027, with the program out in late November or early December. Concerts, plays and guest performers change from year to year. The traditions further down (the Immacolata, the Ninnaredda, Christmas Eve, the Vecchia Strina and the Re Magi) come back every year.

The sources disagree on one venue: the official program put the December 26, 2025, Santo Stefano concert at Teatro Cicero, while MadoniePress's report from that day placed it in Piazza Duomo. Check locally on the day.

What are the must-see Christmas traditions in Cefalù?

The Ninnaredda, the town's own Christmas lullaby

Our pick if you only do one local thing. The Ninnaredda (also spelled Ninnariedda) is a serenade sung to the Baby Jesus. On the evenings before Christmas, local bands and music groups carry it through the streets; in 2025 that was December 16–23, starting at 7 p.m. On Christmas night it finishes in Piazza Duomo after Midnight Mass, with a full band and a solo singer, and inside the cathedral the organ plays Cefalù's traditional version while the Baby Jesus is brought in. There is no published route, so stand near Corso Ruggero at about 7 p.m. and follow the sound.

Ciaramelle, the bagpipers

The Natale cu 'na Ciaramedda program sends shepherd-style bagpipers (zampognari) around the center on certain evenings. In 2025 they played on December 11, 18 and 19 at 6 p.m., with one evening up in the hillside hamlet of Sant'Ambrogio.

La Via dei Presepi, the nativity trail

The Diocese of Cefalù and the Pro Loco organize this trail of nativity scenes across the whole town. It ran from December 8, 2025, to January 6, 2026, through churches, courtyards, monuments and shop windows. The 2025/26 highlights:

  • Mostra Diocesana dei Presepi: SS. Trinità church, San Domenico complex, Via Costa 63, open daily 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • In principio era creta: ceramic nativities from Santo Stefano di Camastra at the Osterio Magno, open daily 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. except December 25. You could buy a separate ticket, or it was included in the cathedral visit routes.
  • Ci è stato dato un figlio: Ottagono di Santa Caterina, Corso Ruggero 137/A, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.
  • More nativities in the cathedral, the Episcopio, the Museo Mandralisca's Magazzino dell'Olio, Porta Pescara (visible at any hour), the Badiola (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), San Pasquale, the Collegio di Maria and the parish churches. A Presepe della Speranza also stands on the cathedral steps, visible at any time.

Time needed: a relaxed loop of the old town takes two to three hours. Go between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., when most of the venues are open at once.

The Christmas Eve sea dip at the Molo

At 11 a.m. on December 24, swimmers from ASD Nuoto Zenit Cefalù lead AbbracciAmo il Natale, a festive plunge off the old harbor; 2025 was its third year. Watching is free. If you'd like to join in, contact the club beforehand, and bring a towel and something warm for afterwards.

Alla Corte del Re, the Norman parade

On December 22, King Roger II's birthday, medieval musicians, flag-wavers from Piazza Armerina and riders from Pollina parade through the center. It is free, and the best photo opportunity of the month.

Santa's House (Casa di Babbo Natale)

It opens on December 6 in the Corte delle Stelle on Corso Ruggero, with storytelling around the tree, street-performer shows and photo spots. With small children on a rainy day, go here.

Opera dei Pupi

Sicily's UNESCO-listed puppet theater usually puts on at least one show at Teatro Cicero during the season; in 2025 it was December 10 at 4 p.m. The shows are short and noisy, and children love them.

The Vecchia Strina (December 31)

This is Cefalù's own New Year's witch. In local folklore, 'A Vecchia Strina lives on La Rocca. On December 31 she comes down with her husband, Maccavaddu, and leaves sweets for good children and ash or coal for naughty ones. In the days before, older children make a racket banging tin cans and old broken pots (i rinali). The Santa Cecilia association's parade sets off at 6 p.m. on December 31 from the Largo Di Giorgio and Piazza Garibaldi area. It is a charming, slightly spooky custom you won't find anywhere else.

Epiphany: the Re Magi

On January 6 the Cavalieri della Valdemone ride in on horseback as the Three Kings, leaving Largo Di Giorgio at 6 p.m. The Magi then arrive at the cathedral's Solemn Pontifical, where the children are blessed (6 p.m. in 2026).

Cefalù Cathedral at Christmas: Mass times, towers and etiquette

What time is Midnight Mass in Cefalù Cathedral?

The 2026 time isn't confirmed. In 2022 and 2024 the bishop led the Christmas Eve Vigil and Mass, which began at 10:30 p.m., with confessions heard beforehand (9 to 10:15 p.m. in 2022, from 9:15 p.m. in 2024). The 2025 program only said the Ninnaredda would follow the Christmas Night Mass, with no time given. If 2026 follows those years, arrive about 45 minutes before 10:30 p.m. if you want a seat, and confirm the time with the cathedral in mid-December. Other parishes in town also hold midnight Masses.

Christmas Day Mass times

In 2024 they were 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 5 p.m. (Rosary and Christmas Vespers) and 6 p.m. The Comune lists 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. as the cathedral's regular Sunday and holiday times. On December 26, 2024, there was also a 6 p.m. Mass at the Chiesa di Santo Stefano.

Can you visit the cathedral over Christmas?

Entry to the nave is free. During the 2025 Via dei Presepi it was open 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. The mosaic area is off-limits while Mass is on. For a guided visit, the private Cefalù tour of the Byzantine mosaics includes the cathedral interior; it is rated 4.8 from 26 reviews and cost $302 per group when we checked.

Can you climb the cathedral towers at Christmas?

Maybe, so check first. The Cooperativa Il Segno runs three paid routes, and their tickets are sold by the cooperative, not on the tour sites:

  • Itinerario Blu: the towers plus the south roof walk. About 80 steps, 30 minutes, €10.
  • Itinerario Rosso, the full visit: towers, roofs, treasury, cloister and more. 55 minutes, €13.
  • Itinerario Verde: the museum and cloister, €10.

What we know about past Christmas openings:

  • 2023/24: officially open December 2 to January 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each morning, plus 3:30 to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Holiday hours were December 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; December 25 closed; December 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m.; December 31, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; January 1, 3:30 to 6 p.m.
  • 2024/25: we found nothing showing a Christmas opening. The routes came back on March 1, 2025, after a short pause.
  • 2025/26: the routes seem to have been running, since the Osterio Magno nativity show (December 8 to January 6) was sold as part of them. We couldn't find published holiday hours.

Check duomocefalu.it or phone the cooperative before you plan around a climb. If the towers are open, pick a clear morning: the view over the terracotta roofs to the sea is one of the best winter views in Sicily.

Etiquette: cover your shoulders and knees, don't sightsee during services, and stay quiet, with no flash, during Mass. If you go into Midnight Mass, plan to stay for the whole service; standing at the back to watch is fine.

Dolcemente Castelbuono

Dolcemente Castelbuono is held over the Immacolata weekend; in 2025 it ran December 6, 7 and 8, and the 2026 dates had not been officially published when we checked, so confirm them on the organizers' page before you plan. Pastry stalls fill Castelbuono's main street all the way up to the castle. Look for the giant buccellato, the town's layered spoon dessert testa di turco (traditionally with a free tasting at 3 p.m.), and stands from Fiasconaro, Bergi and the Antica Pasticceria del Corso. There is also street food, ragù made with Madonie black pork, vin brûlé and Modica chocolate. In 2024 the festival added extra weekends later in December and a New Year's Eve concert in Piazza Castello from 9 p.m., so look out for bonus dates.

Getting there: about 25 minutes by car. Parking is difficult on festival days, so arrive before noon or go with a guide: the Sicilian Villages & Ricotta day from Cefalù (4.7 from 57 reviews, from $70) covers the Madonie villages with lunch. Our Madonie in winter guide has the roads, the buses and more on Castelbuono itself.

Gangi living nativity

For Da Nazareth a Betlemme, Gangi turns an entire medieval quarter, around Santa Lucia and Piazza del Popolo, into Bethlehem. In 2025 it ran December 26–29. According to VivaSicilia it won the ITALIVE award in 2017, and the town's own tourism material ranks it among Europe's finest; those are the organizers' and local press's words, not an independent ranking. In 2025, tickets went on sale on November 15 at presepeviventegangi.com, and they tend to sell out, so book as soon as 2026 sales open. Turn up at the exact time on your ticket. A shuttle from lower Gangi up to Piazza San Paolo was included, and dinner at any restaurant in Gangi also got you into the town's museum circuit for free. Gangi sits high in the Madonie and the roads can ice over: drive up in daylight, pack warm layers, and skip the latest slots if you're not used to mountain driving.

Custonaci cave nativity

According to the organizers (grottamangiapane.it), more than 150 performers recreate traditional Sicilian crafts inside the prehistoric Grotta Mangiapane. The cave has hosted a living nativity since 1983, 2025 was the 41st edition, and since 2006 it has been on Sicily's register of intangible heritage. The dates don't match across sources: the organizer lists December 25–28, 2025, and January 3–6, 2026, while Italia.it gives December 25–29 and January 4–6. Go with the organizer's site. Custonaci is right at the western tip of the island, so it only makes sense as part of a stay in Palermo and western Sicily; our day trips from Palermo guide covers that side of the island.

Palermo and Monreale at Christmas

In 2025 the Palermo Christmas Village (Fiera del Mediterraneo, Pavilion 20) was open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. It closed at 7 p.m. on December 24 and 31 and didn't open until 4 p.m. on December 25 and January 1. It had the Palermo on Ice rink and a food hall. The Via Cavour market ran 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and until midnight at weekends. See Monreale's mosaics in the morning and spend the evening at a Palermo market; our Monreale Cathedral guide has the practical details. For a guided day in the city from Cefalù, the Palermo walking tour with street food from Cefalù is rated 4.9 from 33 reviews and started from $67; it does not include Monreale. If you are staying in Palermo, the Monreale and Cefalù half-day tour from Palermo (4.3 from 1,761 reviews, from $68) covers both towns.

Christmas Eve, Christmas lunch and New Year's Eve

  • Christmas Eve is traditionally a family dinner at home, with no meat and plenty of fish. Many restaurants close or offer only set menus, so book.
  • Christmas lunch on December 25 is the main family meal of the season. The restaurants that open serve fixed-price menus and fill up early.
  • The New Year's Eve cenone: in Cefalù, Cibò offered a 2025/26 New Year's Eve menu at €80 per person with water and wine included, and served cotechino and lentils at midnight (the lentils are for luck and money). Baglio del Falco charged €90 per person for 2024/25, with cover, water and wine included. QuiFinanza estimated the average Italian restaurant New Year's Eve dinner in 2024/25 at around €93 per person, offered by 76.9% of restaurants, so budget about that for a set dinner in town. For comparison, the Federconsumatori Osservatorio put a classic New Year's Eve dinner at home at €57.82 per head for 2025, up 2% on 2024.
  • Booking: contact restaurants directly from early December, or by mid-November if you want December 31. Ask whether wine and the midnight lentils and toast are included, and what time dinner finishes if you plan to be in Piazza Duomo at midnight.

For a guided food day, the Cefalù food and wine tour takes about 4 hours and is rated 4.8 from 60 reviews, from $138. The cooking class at a local's home (Cesarine) is private and runs at a time you choose; it is rated 4.5 from 24 reviews (a thin record, so read the recent ones), from $168. Our wine and food tours in Sicily guide has more classes and tastings, including a cellar tasting in town.

Museo Mandralisca: the sources disagree. The Comune's page says that from November to March the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Mondays, and on Christmas Day and New Year's Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Older listings give 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 7 p.m. on holidays, or say it is open every day. Go with the Comune's page, and phone +39 0921 421547 if your plans depend on it. The museum holds Antonello da Messina's Portrait of a Man and is the best indoor sight in town on a rainy afternoon.

La Rocca: the urban park publishes no holiday closures, and the paths close in bad weather; its standard winter hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry 3 p.m. Our Cefalù in winter guide has the rules for the climb. And remember, local folklore says the Vecchia Strina lives up there.

How do I get to Cefalù over Christmas and New Year?

  • From Palermo airport (PMO): the Prestia e Comandè timetable shows a bus to Palermo Centrale every 30 minutes, taking 50 minutes, from early morning until after midnight. The company says it runs a normal service every day of the year, holidays included, and single airport bus tickets are sold on GetYourGuide from $7 (4.6 from more than 4,600 reviews). From Palermo Centrale, regional trains take 45 to 60 minutes to Cefalù. Check Trenitalia for reduced service on December 25 and January 1 and late on December 24 and 31.
  • Direct airport to Cefalù train: Trenitalia's direct Cefalù Line has run as a summer service on Sundays and holidays only. Don't rely on it in winter unless Trenitalia lists it for your date.
  • Private transfer: the easiest option on December 24 and 25 and December 31 and January 1. The private transfer from Palermo airport to Cefalù cost $197 for two when we checked; it is rated 5.0 but from only 6 reviews, so read them before you book.
  • Car: useful for Castelbuono, Gangi and the Madonie. Check for snow or ice in the mountains, and watch out for Cefalù's ZTL (limited traffic zone).

The full options, including the last trains and parking, are in the getting-there section of our Cefalù in winter guide.

Where to stay, and how early to book for Christmas in Cefalù

  • Demand: December in Cefalù is much calmer than summer, but Christmas week, and above all December 30 to January 1, brings a rush of Italian visitors. Many seasonal hotels also close completely from November to March, so there are fewer rooms to go round.
  • Prices: rates go up noticeably over New Year, and two- to three-night minimum stays are common. The rest of December and early January, apart from December 6–8, are among the cheapest weeks of the year.
  • When to book: New Year's Eve stays by October or November, Christmas week by mid-November, and the Immacolata weekend (December 6–8, usually also Dolcemente Castelbuono) by early November.
  • Where: stay in or right beside the centro storico so you can walk to Midnight Mass and the New Year's party in the piazza. Ask specifically about heating, because many apartments only have air-conditioning heat pumps, and check that the place is open over the holidays.
  • Hotel New Year packages: some hotels include the cenone with your room, so compare that with booking a restaurant in town yourself.

What's the weather like in Cefalù at Christmas?

Late December on the Tyrrhenian coast is mild and changeable. December in Cefalù averages a high of 17.4°C and a low of 11.6°C, with 79 mm of rainfall over the month, usually in wet, windy spells with bright, clear days in between. The sea averages 16.9°C in December, warmer than the night air, which is how the Christmas Eve dip is possible. Up in the Madonie towns (Gangi, the Petralias, Piano Battaglia) it is far colder, and snow is possible. The month-by-month figures are on our best time to visit Cefalù page.

What to pack: a waterproof jacket, a warm layer for the evening events (most are outdoors after dark), comfortable shoes with grip for wet stone streets, a hat and gloves for the Gangi nativity, a swimsuit if you're feeling brave, and something smart-casual for Midnight Mass or the New Year's Eve dinner.

Sample four-day Christmas itinerary (December 23–26)

Day 1, December 23: arrive and see the nativities. Spend the afternoon on the Via dei Presepi (the diocesan exhibition opened at 4:30 p.m. in 2025), then have an aperitivo on Corso Ruggero and catch the Ninnaredda at 7 p.m. There was also a cathedral concert on this evening in 2025, so check the program.

Day 2, December 24: sea, sweets and Midnight Mass. Watch, or join, the Christmas dip at the Molo at 11 a.m. After lunch, pick up a buccellato for later. Santa's tour for children was at 5 p.m. in 2025. Have an early dinner, booked in advance, and get to the cathedral in good time for the Vigil Mass (10:30 p.m. in 2022 and 2024), then stay for the Ninnaredda on the steps.

Day 3, December 25: a slow Christmas. Christmas lunch at a restaurant you've booked. Walk the seafront in the afternoon and visit the Museo Mandralisca if it is open (the Comune lists 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.). Keep the evening quiet.

Day 4, December 26: the Gangi living nativity. Drive up into the Madonie in the late morning, have lunch in Gangi, and go to your pre-booked nativity slot between 5 and 6 p.m. Then drive back to Cefalù in good time, or spend the night in the mountains.

New Year variant (December 30 to January 2)

December 30: Palermo's markets and Monreale, on a tour or by train. December 31: the Vecchia Strina parade at 6 p.m., then the cenone, then the Piazza Duomo party (from 11 p.m. in 2025). January 1: a long lunch, and a walk on the lower Rocca paths if they are open and dry. January 2: a cooking class or Castelbuono.

Epiphany variant (January 5–6)

Morning of January 6: the Teofania at Piana degli Albanesi, from 10:30 a.m. Evening: back to Cefalù for the Re Magi horseback parade and the cathedral Pontifical, both at 6 p.m. in 2026.

Is Christmas in Cefalù good for families?

Very good. Most events are free and start in the early evening. There is Santa's House at the Corte delle Stelle, parades with mascots and stilt-walkers, the Opera dei Pupi, children's theater at Teatro Cicero (Dickens's A Christmas Carol, Befana shows), sweet-making workshops and a tombola in Sant'Ambrogio, and the Vecchia Strina handing out treats. Palermo's Christmas Village and ice rink make a good backup if it rains. The drawbacks: the Ninnaredda after Midnight Mass and the New Year's party (from 11 p.m.) run too late for toddlers, and the Gangi nativity means steep, cold streets.

Sources and methodology

Last checked October 22, 2026. Nothing for 2026/27 was confirmed by an official source except the weekdays and Carnevale Termitano's 2027 dates (Comune di Termini Imerese, notice of October 8, 2026). Event times and performers come from the 2025/26 Magico Natale program published by the Comune di Cefalù on December 1, 2025, VisitCefalù, the diocese's Via dei Presepi listings reported by Balarm, and earlier years where marked. Dolcemente Castelbuono's 2025 dates are from the organizers' page and MadoniePress; an official 2026 program had not appeared when we checked.

Cathedral: the 2023/24 Christmas route hours were reported by MadoniePress; we found no Christmas opening for 2024/25, and 2025/26 seems to have opened without published hours. The 10:30 p.m. Midnight Mass time is from Cefalùnews for 2022 and 2024; we found no 2025 time. Regular Mass times are from the Comune's religious communities page.

Conflicting sources: the Custonaci dates (the organizer against Italia.it), Museo Mandralisca's holiday hours (the Comune against older listings), the Santo Stefano concert venue (the Comune against MadoniePress), and the Gangi price (Balarm reported a flat €10, while the official rules give €8 to €12 depending on the time slot). We followed the official source each time. Calling Gangi's nativity one of Europe's finest is the organizers' and local press's claim, not an independent ranking.

Weather: average air temperature and rainfall are from the SIAS regional agrometeorological station at Cefalù and sea temperature from NOAA satellite records, the same figures as our best time to visit Cefalù page. Not independently checked: accommodation prices and minimum stays, reduced holiday train services, and which tour operators run over the holidays; treat them as guidance.

New Year's Eve dinner prices are from Cibò Cefalù (2025/26), Cefalùnews (Baglio del Falco, 2024/25), QuiFinanza and Federconsumatori. Transport is from Prestia e Comandè's timetable and BlueKeys. Tours: ratings and review counts are from the live GetYourGuide listings on October 22, 2026; prices are the from-prices shown when we checked. cefalutours.com earns a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.
