The short answer
Cefalù's old town, cathedral and La Rocca can be visited throughout the year, while the beach clubs and the cathedral's paid tower and rooftop route (March to September) are limited to part of it. Sicily's official bathing season, the window in which the beach clubs may open, runs from May 1 to October 31, although each lido sets its own dates within it. Boat trips have shorter seasons too: the ones with published dates run from spring to the end of October. For the beach, the biggest difference between months is the sea temperature; for the walk up La Rocca, it is the heat on a sun-exposed path that takes about two hours.
For a trip that combines swimming, sightseeing and La Rocca, June and September are the best overall months. In June you get the longest days, very little rain and a sea of 22 to 23°C. September has warmer water, about 25.5°C, and slightly cooler afternoons than midsummer, although showers become more likely. June is the better choice for long, dry days; September if a warmer sea matters more.
July and August have the warmest sea, at 26 to 27°C, but also the strongest heat, with afternoons close to 30°C. For crowds, overnight stays in Cefalù peaked in July and August 2025, a figure that counts people staying in town, not visitors on the beach or in the old town. If you mainly want the beach, these are the peak months, so book ahead; if you also plan to walk La Rocca and explore the old town, June or September is more comfortable.
April, May and October were the quieter shoulder months in 2025, and April and May are the better pair for sightseeing and La Rocca, with afternoons of about 20 to 23°C. The sea is still cool then, though: 16°C in April and 18 to 19°C in May. October keeps the sea at 22 to 23°C, but it is much wetter. From November to March Cefalù is much quieter and outside the bathing season, but the old town, the cathedral and La Rocca can still be enjoyed on a dry day, with afternoons of about 16 to 21°C.
For La Rocca, start at the 8 a.m. opening from May to September to avoid the strongest midday heat. Once the clocks go back, from late October to late March, last entry is at 3 p.m. and the park closes at 5 p.m., so start around midday if you want plenty of time for the climb and descent; our La Rocca winter guide has the route and safety advice. Check the council's weather notices too, because the park can close during severe-weather alerts, as it did in January 2026. For summer boat trips, late afternoon or sunset avoids the hottest hours, and whatever month you go, check the wind and wave forecast before departure, because rough seas can cancel a trip or change its route.

How Cefalù changes through the year
June and September. In June the bathing season has been open for a month, the sea reaches about 22.9°C and an average June brings only about 9 mm of rain. Sunset is after 8 p.m. in mid-June, which leaves a long evening on the Lungomare after a morning on La Rocca. September's sea is the warmer of the two, at 25.5°C, and afternoons are still around 27.8°C, but rain comes back: an average September has about 50 mm against 18 mm in August. Both months had fewer people staying overnight than July or August in 2025, about 166,000 nights in June and 171,000 in September, although arrivals were much the same.
July and August. Afternoons in Cefalù average 29.3°C in July and 29.9°C in August, and at Palermo airport, the nearest station with a current long-term record, about 10 days in July and 12 to 13 in August reach 30°C or more. The sea is at its warmest, 26.1°C and 27.2°C, and August recorded the most overnight stays of 2025, about 204,000. The town's own calendar adds to that: the Santissimo Salvatore festival fills the center from August 2 to 6, with the 'Ntinna a Mari pole contest at the old harbor on August 6, and August 15 is Ferragosto, a national holiday. On those days an 8 a.m. start on La Rocca and an evening boat trip keep you out of the midday heat.
May and October. Both months are inside the bathing season and inside the boat operators' published seasons, with fewer people staying in town than in June or September (2025 figures). The sea sets them apart. In May it is still cool, about 18.9°C, but afternoons average 23.0°C with little rain, so May is a strong month for the old town and La Rocca with a short swim. In October the sea is still about 22.8°C, warmer than in May because the water cools slowly, but October is the wettest month on Cefalù's long-term record, with about 89 mm, and the bathing season and most published boat seasons end on October 31. The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, and La Rocca moves to its winter-time hours the same day.
April. Afternoons average about 19.5°C, La Rocca is on its summer-time hours from the last Sunday of March, and the cathedral's paid rooftop and tower routes reopen in March, so April suits sightseeing and walking. The sea is still about 16.0°C and the bathing season has not started. Overnight stays in April 2025 were under half of August's.
November to March. Cefalù is at its quietest, with fewer than 20,000 overnight stays a month in 2025 and fewer than 7,000 a month from December to February. Afternoons average 15.8°C to 20.6°C, each month brings 65 to 80 mm of rain, and it is the windier half of the year: the mean wind at Palermo airport is 18 to 19 km/h from November to March against 13 to 14 km/h in summer. The bathing season is closed and fewer boat trips are scheduled, but the cathedral is free to enter all year, La Rocca stays open on its winter-time hours with a 3 p.m. last entry, and the town runs its Christmas program from December 6 to January 6. How busy is Cefalù, month by month?
Cefalù's own visitor figures come from the national statistics office, which counts arrivals at the town's registered hotels and holiday rentals every month, and the nights they stay. In 2025 overnight stays ran from about 5,000 in January to 204,000 in August, with July at about 188,000, September 171,000, June 166,000, May 140,000 and October 124,000. April had about 95,000, and March and November fewer than 20,000 each.
September is not much quieter than the summer. Arrivals were almost the same every month from May to September, between about 44,000 and 49,000, and September had nearly as many as August. What rises in July and August is how long people stay, so beds and beaches are full for longer. Italian residents made up about a fifth of the 2025 nights, so the Italian school holidays are one source of summer demand among several.
Two gaps matter. The count covers people sleeping in Cefalù, not the day trippers who arrive by train from Palermo, by coach or from cruise ships, so the old town and the Lungomare can be busier by day than the overnight figures suggest. And 2025 is the first year in which the series includes private holiday rentals, so it cannot be set against earlier years: treat it as one year's pattern and compare months within it.
La Rocca and the cathedral through the year
La Rocca is run by the town council, with tickets sold at the entrance (€5, €2.50 reduced). It opens at 8 a.m. in every season. From March 30 to the end of October 2026 it closes at 7 p.m. with last entry at 5 p.m., and from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March it closes at 5 p.m. with last entry at 3 p.m. The council's page also mentions an 8 p.m. closing with last entry at 6 p.m. for the summer period, so check the notice at the gate. Most of the path to the Tempio di Diana and the castle is exposed to the sun, the round trip to the summit from Corso Ruggero, the old town's main street, takes about two hours, and closed shoes with grip are required; sandals and flip-flops are not allowed.
From May to September the 8 a.m. opening is the coolest hour you can get, and in July and August carry water. In the winter-time months last entry is at 3 p.m. and the park closes at 5 p.m., so start around midday if you want plenty of time for the climb and descent: the council's two hours is the time to the summit from the old town, so the whole outing is longer. Bad weather can close it: there is no standing rule, but in January 2026 the mayor closed the park by ordinance on days when Cefalù was under an orange weather alert, so if a storm is forecast, check the council's notices before walking up.
Entry to the cathedral is free, and its published hours are 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., subject to change, with shoulders covered and no very short shorts or skirts. The paid routes onto the roofs, up the towers and into the cloister are published for March to September, daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with last entry 30 minutes before closing; hours for the rest of the year are not published, so check before a winter visit. During Mass the routes stay open but the mosaics and the sacristy cannot be visited. The Museo Mandralisca opens daily from April to October and closes on Mondays from November to March. The beach, the sea and boat trips
Sicily's bathing season is set each year by the regional government and runs from May 1 to October 31. Lifeguard cover is a shorter window: the coastguard's 2025 ordinance required it at the Lungomare's beach clubs from the third Saturday in May to the third Sunday in September, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The beach itself is open to walk on in every month.
The sea off Cefalù averages about 15°C from January to March, 18.9°C in May, 22.9°C in June, 26.1°C in July, 27.2°C in August, 25.5°C in September, 22.8°C in October and 19.9°C in November. Those are long-term averages for the water about 10 km offshore, and recent summers have run well above them: Copernicus Marine reports 2025 as the second-warmest year on record for the Mediterranean, with marine heatwaves across most of the basin.
Boat trips follow each operator's own season. One Cefalù operator publishes March to the end of October and another lists daily departures from May 15 to October 31, so trips are offered from spring to the end of October depending on the operator, with fewer on offer in winter. Choosing a month settles none of this on the day. Depending on the wind and waves, trips may be cancelled, moved to another date or rerouted in any month, and swim stops may be skipped; one operator's policy offers an alternative date or a full refund when the sea is too rough. Book a boat trip for the first part of your stay rather than the final day, so you have another opportunity to rebook, and check the wind and wave forecast in the date checker in the days before.

Rain is the total across an average month, not a count of wet days: October's 89 mm can arrive in a few storms or over many gray days. Sea temperature is a long-term average about 10 km offshore. Where every figure on this page comes from, and where the evidence stops
Cefalù's temperatures and rainfall are the Sicilian agrometeorological service's (SIAS, Regione Siciliana) figures for the Cefalù station at 30 m in its Climatologia della Sicilia: monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature for 1965-1989 and mean monthly rainfall for 1965-1994. No current official normal is published for Cefalù. As a check, ISPRA's 1991-2020 normals for Palermo Punta Raisi airport give afternoon highs within about half a degree of Cefalù's in every summer month; the same normals give the count of days at 30°C or more, and the wind figures are monthly means from the same airport's hourly reports for 1991-2020. No official count of rainy days exists for Cefalù.
Sea temperature is NOAA's OISST v2.1 analysis, the 1991-2020 monthly mean for the grid cell centered at 38.125°N 14.125°E, about 10 km off the town. The statement about recent summers is from the Copernicus Marine Service's 2025 Annual Ocean Health Bulletin.

Where this stops. Cefalù's own temperature averages are from 1965-1989, and recent summers have been hotter, so treat the summer figures as a floor. The sea temperatures are a long-term offshore average and recent Mediterranean summers ran well above it. The wind figures come from Palermo airport, 60 km west, and no rough-sea or cancellation rate is published, so none is claimed. The overnight-stay series does not count day trippers, and 2025 is the first year with holiday rentals included and the only year used. La Rocca's page gives two different summer closing times; the dated 2026 sentence is used here, and the 2027 summer hours are not yet published. The lifeguard window is the 2025 ordinance; the 2026 one for this maritime district was not found online. Boat seasons are those published in September 2026. And an average is not a forecast: a 25.5°C September sea does not rule out a cool, rough week after a storm.
