How Cefalù changes through the year

The sea lags the air by about a month, which is why October keeps a warmer sea than May even though its afternoons are only slightly warmer.

June and September. By June the bathing season has been open since 1 May, the sea averages 22.9°C and it barely rains, with about 9 mm across an average month. The days are the longest of the year, with sunset at about 20:28 in mid-June. Sicilian schools finished on 9 June in 2026 and return on 15 September. September keeps a warmer sea, at 25.5°C, with afternoons of about 27.8°C, but rain returns: about 50 mm in an average September against 18 mm in August. Both months had fewer overnight visitors than August in 2025, about 166,000 in June and 171,000 in September.

July and August. Afternoons in Cefalù average 29.3°C in July and 29.9°C in August, and at Palermo airport, the nearest station with a recent long-term record, about 10 July days and 12 to 13 August days reach 30°C or more. The sea is at its warmest, 26.1°C and 27.2°C. August is also the busiest month for overnight visitors, and the town has its own calendar: the Santissimo Salvatore festival runs from 2 to 6 August, with the 'Ntinna a Mari at the old harbour on 6 August, and 15 August is Ferragosto, a national holiday. Italian residents made up about a fifth of Cefalù's overnight stays in 2025, so the school summer holidays are one source of that demand among several. On days like these, La Rocca at the 8am opening and a sunset boat trip keep you out of the midday heat.

May and October. Both months fall inside the bathing season and inside the published boat seasons, with fewer visitors than June or September. They differ in the water. May's sea is about 18.9°C, fresh for most swimmers, with afternoons of 23.0°C and little rain. October's sea is still about 22.8°C and its afternoons 24.5°C, but it is the wettest month on Cefalù's long-term record, at about 89 mm. The bathing season and the published boat seasons end on 31 October, and when the clocks go back at the end of the month La Rocca moves to its winter hours.

April. A good month for walking the old town and La Rocca, with afternoons of about 19.5°C and La Rocca on its summer hours since the end of March. The sea is still cold, about 16.0°C, and the bathing season has not opened. Overnight stays were under half of August's in 2025. Easter falls in April in most years, with processions through the old town on Good Friday.

November to March. Cefalù is at its quietest, with fewer than 20,000 overnight stays a month in 2025 and fewer than 7,000 a month from December to February. Afternoons average 15.8°C to 20.6°C and most months bring 65 to 80 mm of rain. Far fewer boat trips are scheduled and the bathing season is closed, but the cathedral is free to enter all year and La Rocca stays open on its winter hours, with last entry at 3pm. It is also the windier half of the year: at Palermo airport about 7 to 9 per cent of hours from November to March reach a strong breeze of 39 km/h or more, against 1 per cent or less from June to August. The town puts on Christmas events from early December to 6 January.

How busy is Cefalù, month by month?

The best measurement is Cefalù's own: every month the national statistics office counts the people arriving at the town's hotels and holiday rentals and the nights they stay. In 2025 overnight stays ran from about 5,000 in January to 204,000 in August. July had about 188,000, September 171,000, June 166,000, May 140,000 and October 124,000. April had about 95,000, and November and March fewer than 20,000 each.

September is often thought of as a quiet month, but in Cefalù it is not much quieter than the summer. New arrivals in 2025 were almost the same from May to September, between about 44,000 and 49,000 a month, and September had nearly as many as August. What peaks in July and August is how long people stay, which fills the town's beds and beaches for longer.

Two gaps are worth knowing. The count covers people sleeping in Cefalù, not the day trippers who arrive by train from Palermo, by coach or from cruise excursions, so the old town and the Lungomare can be busier by day than the overnight figures suggest. And 2025 is the first year to include private holiday rentals, so it cannot be compared with earlier years, so compare months within 2025 only.

La Rocca and the cathedral through the year

La Rocca is run by the town council and ticketed at the entrance. It opens at 8am all year. From 30 March to the end of October 2026 it closes at 7pm with last entry at 5pm, and from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March it closes at 5pm with last entry at 3pm. The path up to the Tempio di Diana is exposed to the sun, the summit is about two hours' walk from Corso Ruggero, and open shoes such as sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. Start at the opening in any month, and in July and August carry water.

Weather can close it. There is no standing rule, but in January 2026 the mayor closed the park by ordinance on days when Cefalù was under an orange weather alert. If a storm is forecast, check the council's notices before walking up.

The cathedral is free to enter and open, as currently published, from 8:30am to 1pm and 3:30pm to 6:30pm, with shoulders covered and no very short shorts or skirts. From March to September, the paid routes up the towers, onto the roofs and into the cloister run daily from 10am to 1pm and 3:30pm to 6:30pm; hours for the rest of the year are not published, so check before a winter visit. During Mass the routes stay open but the mosaics and sacristy cannot be visited. The Museo Mandralisca opens daily from April to October and closes on Mondays from November to March. The beach, the sea and boat trips

Sicily's bathing season runs from 1 May to 31 October, set each year by the regional government. Lifeguard cover is a separate, shorter period: in 2025 the coastguard's ordinance required it from the third Saturday in May to the third Sunday in September, from 9am to 7pm. The beach is open to walk on at any time of year.

The sea off Cefalù averages about 15°C from January to March, 18.9°C in May, 22.9°C in June, 26.1°C in July, 27.2°C in August, 25.5°C in September, 22.8°C in October and 19.9°C in November. Those are long-term averages, and recent summers have run warmer: the regional government reported sea temperatures around Sicily 3 to 4°C above normal in August 2026.

Boat trips follow the operators' own seasons. One Cefalù operator publishes March to the end of October, and another lists daily trips from 15 May to 31 October, so the published boat seasons run from spring to the end of October, with far fewer trips on offer in winter. Choosing a month does not settle whether your boat goes out. Depending on the wind and waves, trips may be cancelled or rerouted in any month, and the skipper makes the call on the morning. Month by month, with the figures

Temperatures and rainfall are Cefalù's long-term averages, sea temperature is the average for the water just off the town, sunset is for the 15th of each month, and overnight stays are Cefalù's 2025 figures.

Three columns need a word. Rain is the total for the whole month in an average year, not a daily rate and not a count of wet days, so 89 mm in October is the month's rain added up; it can fall in a few storms or over many days. Sea temperature is a long-term average for the surface water about 10 km offshore. Overnight stays count guests in registered accommodation, a proxy for how busy the town is: it does not count day trippers or people on the beach.

How we know

Cefalù's temperatures and rainfall come from the Sicilian agrometeorological service (SIAS, Regione Siciliana), Climatologia della Sicilia, for the Cefalù station at 30 m: monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature for 1965-1989 and mean monthly rainfall for 1965-1994. No current official normal is published for Cefalù. As a check, the national normals published by ISPRA for Palermo Punta Raisi airport give 1991-2020 afternoon highs within about 0.6 degrees of Cefalù's in every summer month; the same normals give the count of days at 30°C or more. No official count of rainy days exists for Cefalù.

Sea temperature is NOAA's OISST v2.1 analysis, the 1991-2020 monthly mean for the grid cell centred at 38.125°N 14.125°E, about 10 km off the town. Wind is computed for this page from Palermo Punta Raisi's hourly reports for 1991-2020 in NOAA's Integrated Surface Database, for seasonal shape only. Where this stops. Cefalù's own temperature averages are from 1965-1989, and recent summers have been hotter, so treat the summer figures as a floor. The sea temperatures are a long-term offshore average and the last few summers ran warmer. The wind figures come from Palermo airport, 60 km west, and no rough-sea or cancellation rate is published, so none is claimed. Overnight stays count registered guests, not day trippers, and 2025 is the first year with holiday rentals included. La Rocca's page gives two different summer closing times; the dated 2026 hours are used here, and the 2027 summer hours have not been published. Boat seasons are those published in September 2026. And an average is not a forecast: a 25.5°C September sea does not rule out a cool, rough week after a storm.

If your dates are flexible, June and September are the best months overall for a beach and sightseeing trip: the sea is about 23°C in June and 26°C in September, afternoons are around 27 to 28°C, and there are fewer overnight visitors than in August. July and August have the warmest sea and the hottest afternoons. May and October are inside the bathing season with fewer visitors, though October is the wettest month, and from November to March the town is quiet, cooler and wetter, with far fewer boat trips.
