Key facts: winter in Cefalù
- Average high: 15.8°C to 17.4°C from December to February; 20.6°C in November
- Average low: 10°C to 11.6°C from December to February, in town by the sea; 14.2°C in November
- Average rainfall: 76 to 79 mm a month from December to February, 69 mm in November, with sunny spells between fronts
- Sea temperature: 19.9°C in November, 16.9°C in December, 15.1°C in January and 14.4°C in February, the coldest
- Shortest days: about 9.5 hours of daylight in December; sunrise around 7:15 a.m., sunset around 4:45 p.m.
- Cathedral nave: open and free; the paid tower and roof routes publish hours for March to September only
- La Rocca: daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry 3 p.m., €5
- Tourist tax: charged only from April 1 to October 31, so not on a November to February stay under the current rules
- Main events: Magico Natale (December 6 to January 6 in 2025/26), Dolcemente Castelbuono (December 6–8 in 2025), New Year's Eve in Piazza Duomo, Carnevale Termitano (January 30 to February 9, 2027)
- Arriving: Palermo airport, then a bus or train to Palermo Centrale and a train to Cefalù, about 2 to 2.5 hours in total
The tours most likely to run in winter are day trips and the ones held indoors or in the old town. The Cefalù Guided Walking Tour & Authentic Sicilian Aperitivo has reviews from December, January and March, is rated 4.6 from 102 reviews and started from $66 per person when we checked. It is a good first evening: a local guide, the cathedral, the lanes down to the Old Marina, and a board of Sicilian charcuterie with a glass of Prosecco. The calendar shows which dates have departures.
Is Cefalù worth visiting in winter?
Yes, for the right kind of trip. Think of a compact Norman town with people living in it, a UNESCO-listed cathedral, good places to eat and the sea at the end of every lane. A summer resort with the shutters down is the wrong picture.
You'll probably love winter Cefalù if you:
- Care more about mosaics, old lanes, good food and atmosphere than a tan.
- Enjoy famous places almost to yourself: the cathedral, the Bastione at sunset, Corso Ruggero early on a weekday.
- Want a base for day trips to Etna, the hill villages of the Madonie, and Palermo and Monreale.
- Are timing the trip for Christmas, New Year or Carnival, or for the olive harvest and winter cooking.
- Like slow travel, remote work, or a calm break for two.
Choose another month, or another place, if you:
- Mainly want swimming, beach clubs or boat trips. That whole scene largely winds down in October.
- Can't cope with a forecast that goes wrong. Winter storms here are real: on January 18, 2026, Ordinanza Sindacale n. 1, signed by deputy mayor Rosario Lapunzina, closed schools, the Parco della Rocca, the cemetery and other parks for January 19 and 20 because of high winds flagged by a regional Protezione Civile alert, and the closures were then extended to January 21.
- Expect a busy bar scene seven nights a week.
Is Cefalù a ghost town in winter?
No. It is calmer and much of the waterfront goes quiet, but this is a working town with schools, a hospital, a bishop and a busy railway station, so the old town keeps its bars, bakeries and a fair spread of restaurants open all year. The places that close are the ones that live on summer trade: beach lidos, boat-trip booths, many of the gelato and souvenir shops on the Lungomare, and some hotels and holiday rentals. The weeks either side of Christmas and New Year, and weekends with events, are busier; early November and the second half of January are usually quieter.
How busy does Cefalù get in winter?
The town records far fewer overnight stays in winter than in summer. In 2025 the town recorded fewer than 7,000 overnight stays a month from December to February, against about 18,000 in November; the figure counts nights spent in local accommodation, not day visitors. Over a whole year the town is much busier: ISTAT figures put 2024 at 237,165 arrivals, 69% of them from abroad according to KW Hospitality's Osservatorio, and roughly 929,000 overnight stays (Cefalùnews). The average stay has shortened from 4.43 nights in 2015 to 3.92 in 2024.
In a release dated November 4, 2025, the Comune di Cefalù reported more than 980,000 overnight stays for January to September 2025: arrivals rose by nearly 6% while overnight stays slipped by a little over 2%, with spring growing and July and August dipping slightly. Across Sicily, the seasonality index moved from 0.64 in 2023 to 0.62 in 2025, a sign that visits are spreading more evenly through the year. Winter is still the low point.
What's the weather like in Cefalù in winter?
Mild by northern European standards, and changeable. Expect runs of clear, still days in the mid-teens, good for walking, broken up by wet and windy fronts coming in from the Tyrrhenian. December to February each average 76 to 79 mm of rainfall, and February has the coldest sea.
Winter weather, month by month
| Month | Average high | Average low | Average rainfall | Sea | Sunset | Daylight | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 20.6°C | 14.2°C | 69 mm | 19.9°C | 4:52 p.m. | 10h 08m | The best winter month for walking, and the last chance for a bracing swim |
| December | 17.4°C | 11.6°C | 79 mm | 16.9°C | 4:45 p.m. | 9h 33m | Festive, with the shortest days |
| January | 15.8°C | 10.0°C | 76 mm | 15.1°C | 5:08 p.m. | 9h 48m | The coolest air and the fewest overnight stays |
| February | 16.3°C | 10.1°C | 78 mm | 14.4°C | 5:42 p.m. | 10h 47m | Almond blossom, Carnival and longer evenings, with the coldest sea |
Why don't weather websites agree?
Depending on where you look, Cefalù's average winter low is anything from 4°C to 10°C. The reason is where the figure comes from:
- Weather stations in town, the Cefalù station and the regional SIAS and Osservatorio delle Acque networks, record the coast itself. They show average lows of about 10°C in January and February, and across records stretching from 1929 to 2023 the coldest reading at the Cefalù station, 30 m above sea level, was 0.0°C, in January 1962 and again in December 2014.
- Model-based climate sites work from grid squares that blend in the high ground behind the town. That is where a 4°C average night comes from: plausible up in the Madonie, not on the seafront.
- What to expect: nights of about 10°C in Cefalù, close to freezing in Castelbuono or Petralia, and a chance of snow at Piano Battaglia (more in our Madonie in winter guide).
Can you swim in Cefalù in winter?
Only if you are hardy. The sea averages about 20°C in November, which is about what many northern Europeans swim in at the height of their summer. By January and February it is down to about 15°C and 14°C, wetsuit territory. Locals mark the season with a festive dip: the 2025 Magico Natale program included the AbbracciAmo il Natale Christmas Eve swim at the Molo, at 11 a.m. on December 24. Stay out of the water when there is a swell, because winter waves can be dangerous, and never swim alone: no lifeguards or lidos operate in winter.
What should I pack for Cefalù in winter?
- Layers: a T-shirt, a warm sweater or fleece, and a jacket that is both windproof and waterproof. On the seafront the tramontana and maestrale winds can make 14°C feel more like 8°C.
- Shoes with real grip. La Rocca requires them (see below), and the worn limestone paving in the old town turns slick when wet.
- A small umbrella, which the gusts will test, and a scarf or shawl that doubles as a shoulder cover in churches.
- Warm socks or warm sleepwear. Many Sicilian homes and rentals have tiled floors and only air-conditioning heat pumps (see where to stay).
- For Etna or the Madonie: a hat, gloves and a proper winter coat. On Etna the cable car climbs from about 1,920 m to 2,500 m, and Tour 3000 goes on toward 3,000 m; up there it is often below freezing and snowy.

Cefalù Cathedral: what can you see in winter?
The nave and Roger II's 12th-century gold mosaic in the apse, the main reason to visit, are free and open daily through the winter. Work on the cathedral began in 1131, and since 2015 it has been part of the UNESCO Arab-Norman World Heritage site.
The paid routes, run by the Cooperativa Il Segno, are seasonal. The cooperative's official site gives full visiting times for March to September, every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. For November it lists shorter tower hours, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and it publishes nothing for December to February. In recent years the full routes have reopened on March 1. The only winter opening we found was a Christmas run from December 2, 2023, to January 7, 2024. If the towers and roofs matter to you, email or phone the cooperative before you commit. For a guided visit inside the cathedral, the private Cefalù tour of the Byzantine mosaics is rated 4.8 from 26 reviews and cost $302 per group when we checked; it does not include the towers.
Route prices for 2026, from the official site:
- Red (full route): €13 adult, €10 reduced, €8 for students aged 6 to 26. Covers the towers (roughly 80 uneven steps in each), a view from under the mosaics, the south roofs, sacristy, treasury, bishop's chapel, cloister and Osterio Magno. About 55 minutes.
- Blue (views): €10, €8 reduced. Towers, roofs and mosaics. About 30 minutes.
- Green (museum): €10, €8 reduced. Sacristy, treasury, Sansoni hall, bishop's chapel and the canons' cloister. About 30 minutes.
- Osterio Magno alone: €2.
Many blogs still show the old prices (Red €10, Blue €7, Green €6). Those are no longer current.
Is La Rocca open in winter?
Yes, and winter is the best season for it. The path has no shade, which makes summer climbs hard work; in winter it is a crisp walk of about two hours up and back, past the megalithic Temple of Diana, whose cistern goes back to the 9th century BC, to the castle remains on top of the 268 to 270 m headland.
- Winter hours, once the clocks go back: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry 3 p.m., according to the Comune di Cefalù page updated on September 28, 2026. A few older guides give 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; go with the Comune.
- Tickets: €5 full price, €2.50 reduced (ages 6 to 14, over-65s, teachers), free for residents. Buy them at the ticket office or machine at the entrance on Piazza Garibaldi and Salita Saraceni.
- Rules: no sandals, flip-flops or shoes with smooth soles; minors must be accompanied; keep to the marked paths.
- Weather closures: when the regional Protezione Civile issues an alert, the mayor can close the Rocca park by ordinance. Ordinanza Sindacale n. 1 of January 18, 2026, closed the Parco della Rocca on January 19 and 20 because of strong gusts, and a second ordinance kept it closed through January 21.
- Our tip: last entry is at 3 p.m. and the sun sets around 4:45 p.m. in December, so start around midday if you want plenty of time. Skip it the day after heavy rain, when the top section is slippery. Our best time to visit Cefalù guide has La Rocca's hours through the rest of the year, and our guide to climbing La Rocca in winter covers the route, safety and the Temple of Diana.
Museo Mandralisca
A small, quirky collection best known for Antonello da Messina's Portrait of an Unknown Man (about 1465), along with a Greek krater painted with a tuna seller and a shell collection of more than 20,000 pieces. It is ideal for an hour when it's pouring.
- Winter, November to March: Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Mondays. Christmas Day and New Year's Day: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.
- Tickets: €8 full, €6 reduced (ages 11 to 15, groups of 10 or more), €3 (ages 6 to 10, school groups).
- Conflicting listings: TripAdvisor, Viator and older blogs give daily opening, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours or a €6 ticket. We follow the Comune di Cefalù's official page.
Lavatoio Medievale and Bastione di Capo Marchiafava
- Lavatoio Medievale (Via Vittorio Emanuele and Discesa Fiume): a wash-house from 1514 where water from the Cefalino spring still runs through stone basins. Free. Opening times differ between sources, roughly 10 a.m. to noon and then from 3 or 4 p.m. until 7 or 8 p.m. Expect about 20 steps down.
- Bastione di Capo Marchiafava: a 16th- to 17th-century bastion on the sea, reached from Via Bordonaro, free and outdoors. On a clear winter day you may pick out the Aeolian Islands. It is our pick for sunset.
Sundays, Mondays and public holidays
| Date | Holiday | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| November 1 | Ognissanti (All Saints) | Many shops closed; restaurants busy at lunchtime |
| December 8 | Immacolata | A long weekend for Italians and the Dolcemente Castelbuono weekend; the Via dei Presepi nativity trail opened in Cefalù on this day in 2025 |
| December 24, evening | Christmas Eve | Midnight Mass in the Duomo, followed by the Ninnaredda in Piazza Duomo; many restaurants don't serve dinner |
| December 25–26 | Natale and Santo Stefano | Most shops closed; book Christmas lunch weeks ahead |
| December 31 and January 1 | Capodanno | New Year's Eve concert in Piazza Duomo; January 1 stays very quiet until the afternoon |
| January 6 | Epifania | The end of the Christmas season; there was a Three Kings horse parade in 2025/26 |
- Mondays: Museo Mandralisca is closed, and many restaurants take Monday or Tuesday off.
- Sundays: Mass times limit mosaic viewing, and trains run to a separate timetable.
- Treat Google Maps winter hours with suspicion. Many listings show summer hours all year, or say a place is open when it closes from January until Easter. Call, send a WhatsApp message, or check the business's Instagram or Facebook page.
What are the best things to do in Cefalù in winter?
- See the cathedral with almost nobody else there. Go at opening time or mid-afternoon on a weekday. The Pantocrator in low winter light is reason enough for the trip.
- Walk up La Rocca on a crisp, clear day. On a good one you can see the Aeolian Islands from the top.
- Catch an early sunset at the Bastione di Capo Marchiafava or by the old harbor (Porto Vecchio), then go for an aperitivo. The sun sets about 4:45 p.m. in December and about 5:40 p.m. by mid-February.
- Walk Corso Ruggero and down to the Lavatoio first thing, while the lanes are empty and the wash-house steps are still wet and shining.
- Fill a wet afternoon with Museo Mandralisca, then a cooking class or a food tour. Our wine and food tours in Sicily guide covers the classes and tastings around Cefalù.
- Eat what's in season: citrus at its peak, artichokes, sfincione, Madonie mushrooms and pork, ricotta, buccellato and the other Christmas sweets, plus peppery green olio nuovo straight from the mill, from roughly late October to December.
- Take a day trip to Etna and Taormina, the Madonie, or Palermo and Monreale (details below).
Which tours run in winter?
We went through the Cefalù listings on GetYourGuide. In winter, day trips and indoor food experiences are the likeliest to run; boat and Aeolian Islands excursions are summer products. Always check the booking calendar for your dates, because a tour being listed doesn't mean it runs in January. Most GetYourGuide products allow free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
| Tour type | Our pick on GetYourGuide | Duration | Rating (reviews) | From | Winter verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etna and Taormina from Cefalù | From Cefalù: Etna & Taormina guided tour full day (Noema Viaggi) | 10h | 4.7 (37) | $79 | Coach up to about 2,000 m at the Silvestri Craters, then about 1.5 hours in Taormina. A long day; snow or wind can change the Etna stops, and winter departures are unconfirmed, so check the calendar for your date |
| Etna on foot to about 3,000 m | Etna Excursion to 3000 mt. with Cable-Car and Jeep 4x4 | 4h | 4.6 (834) | $43 | A guide only: the cable car and jeep fees are extra, and you meet at Rifugio Sapienza, so you need your own transport |
| Madonie by jeep | Cefalù: Madonie Park Jeep Adventure | 4.5h | 4.6 (34) | $156 | A strong winter option; wrap up warm |
| Madonie villages and ricotta | From Cefalù: Sicilian Villages & Ricotta with Lunch & Wine | 9h | 4.7 (57) | $70 | A very good match for winter food |
| Palermo from Cefalù | From Cefalù: Palermo Guided Walking Tour with Street Food | Full day | 4.9 (33) | $67 | Palermo only; for Monreale too, go by train and bus (45 to 60 minutes to Palermo) |
| Home cooking | Cefalù: Cooking Class at a Local's Home (Cesarine) | 3h | 4.5 (24) | $168 | Indoors, private and at a time you choose; a thin review record, so read the recent reviews |
| Food and wine tour | Cefalù: Authentic Food & Wine Tour | 4h | 4.8 (60) | $138 | Old-town tastings, an aperitivo and a sit-down lunch; a morning outing |
| Walking tour plus aperitivo | Cefalù Guided Walking Tour & Authentic Sicilian Aperitivo | 2.5h | 4.6 (102) | $66 | A good way to get your bearings on the first evening |
For Etna, the Noema Viaggi day is the better choice if you want the higher stop and a smaller group (if it is running on your date; we could not confirm winter departures), and the guided Etna walk from Rifugio Sapienza if you have a car and want a cheaper, higher option (the cable car and jeep fees come on top). For a rainy day, the Cesarine class at a local\'s home is indoors and private, at a time you choose.
Best day trips from Cefalù in winter
| Day trip | How | Time | Why go in winter |

For the full December calendar, see our guide to Christmas in Cefalù 2026.
What did Magico Natale look like last time? The 2025/26 edition, from December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026, had Santa's House in the Corte delle Stelle on Corso Ruggero, bagpipers (Natale cu 'na Ciaramedda), Opera dei Pupi puppet shows, traditional Ninnaredda carols, children's shows at Teatro Cicero, the nativity trail and a series of concerts in Piazza Duomo. All of it was free. A similar program is likely for 2026/27, and we will update this page once the official program is out.
How do I get to Cefalù in winter?
Our pick: fly into Palermo (PMO), take the train or the Prestia e Comandè bus to Palermo Centrale, then the regional train to Cefalù. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours door to door and about €13 to €14 per person.
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Train: airport to Palermo Centrale to Cefalù, on one through ticket | About 2 to 2.5 hours | About €13 | Most people | A direct airport to Cefalù train has run only on Sundays and holidays, as part of the seasonal Cefalù Line; plan on changing trains in winter |
| Prestia e Comandè bus to Centrale, then the train | 50 minutes by bus, plus 45 to 60 minutes by train | €6 online (€6.50 on board), plus about €7 for the train | Fairly late arrivals and frequent departures | Buses run every 30 minutes from early morning until after midnight, but they stop in Palermo. Airport bus tickets are sold on GetYourGuide from $7 (4.6 from more than 4,600 reviews) |
| Private transfer | About 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes | About €130 to €217 per vehicle (quotes differ) | Families, heavy bags, late flights | Book ahead. The Palermo airport to Cefalù private transfer on GetYourGuide cost $197 for two when we checked; it has only 6 reviews (5.0) so far |
| Rental car | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Varies | Anyone exploring the Madonie or Etna | Cefalù's ZTL and parking |
- Check the last train. In an August 2026 check by the transfer company BlueKeys, the last direct train from Palermo Centrale to Cefalù left at 9:33 p.m. and arrived at 10:30 p.m. The winter timetable may differ, so check Trenitalia for your date; if you land after about 8 p.m. you may need a transfer or a night in Palermo.
- No bus runs directly from Palermo airport to Cefalù.
- Catania (CTA) makes sense if you are pairing the trip with Etna or the east of the island, but the transfer to Cefalù is far longer. Palermo is the obvious gateway.
- Driving and parking: the old town is a ZTL (limited traffic zone). Stay out unless your hotel registers your license plate. The Comune's Lungomare car park, with roughly 540 spaces, can be reached without entering the ZTL, and there are blue-line bays and private lots too. Winter rates tend to be lower than summer ones (one private operator lists high-season rates only, for March 31 to November 2), but read the signs.
- Aeolian Islands: no hydrofoils leave Cefalù in winter. Liberty Lines' Palermo to Aeolian hydrofoils are mainly a summer service (from October 1 they sail only on Mondays and Fridays). Milazzo has crossings all year.
Where should I stay in Cefalù in winter?
| Area | Winter pros | Winter cons | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old town (centro storico) | Everything that's open is a few minutes' walk away; full of character; handy for Christmas events | Stone buildings can be damp and chilly; ZTL, so you park outside | Our pick if you are not driving |
| Lungomare and near the station | Sea views, easier parking and train access | Some seasonal hotels close; the seafront catches the wind | Works well with a car or for early trains |
| Rural agriturismo in the Madonie foothills | Open fires, home cooking, olive-harvest activities | A car is essential; nights are colder | Best if your trip is about food or the Madonie |
Take heating seriously. Many Sicilian rentals rely on reverse-cycle air-conditioning (heat pumps) or plug-in heaters, and tiled floors with single glazing feel cold when it's 10°C outside. Before you book, look for heating (riscaldamento) in the listing, check whether it costs extra, and read reviews from recent winter guests.
How many days? Three to four days works well: a day and a half in Cefalù and two day trips. Over Christmas week, five days isn't too many.
Sample four-day winter itinerary
- Day 1, arrival: the train from Palermo, check in, a stroll along Corso Ruggero, sunset at the Bastione (about 4:45 p.m. in December), an aperitivo, then dinner in the old town.
- Day 2, Cefalù: the cathedral as it opens, then the Lavatoio and Porto Vecchio. La Rocca late in the morning, since last entry is at 3 p.m. A late lunch, then Museo Mandralisca (not on a Monday). In the evening, a Magico Natale event or the Cefalù food and wine tour (a morning tour, so book a different day).
- Day 3, Etna in winter or the Madonie: an Etna and Taormina tour (a long day, and winter departures are unconfirmed, so check first), or Castelbuono plus Petralia and Gangi by car or on the villages and ricotta tour.
- Day 4, Palermo and Monreale: an early train, Monreale's mosaics, Palermo's markets and street food, and back in Cefalù well before the last train. If you'd rather be guided around Palermo, the Palermo walking tour with street food from Cefalù covers the city but not Monreale.
- If it rains: move the cooking class or the museum to whichever day looks worst.
Practical tips for a winter trip
- Tourist tax: Cefalù's imposta di soggiorno was set by a determina from Mayor Daniele Tumminello in January 2024: €1.50 per person per night at campsites, €2 for 1- to 3-star hotels, B&Bs and rentals, and up to €5 at 5-star luxury hotels, for a maximum of 5 nights. It is charged only between April 1 and October 31, so stays from November to February are exempt under the rules as they stand. Still, check your booking for an unexpected line item.
- Weather warnings: watch for alerts from the regional Protezione Civile Sicilia and on the Comune di Cefalù website or Facebook page. Under orange or red alerts the town may close La Rocca, the parks and the cemetery. Postpone hikes and mountain drives.
- Plan around daylight: in December the sun rises around 7:15 a.m. and sets around 4:45 p.m.; by mid-February sunset has moved to about 5:40 p.m. Do the outdoor sights in the morning and leave museums and meals for later.
- Paying: cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep some cash for bars, bakeries and small trattorias.
- Safety: stay well back from the breakwater in a storm, because big waves break over it. The other real winter risks are slick stone underfoot and mountain roads in fog or ice. Cefalù itself is a small town with little crime; normal pickpocket sense applies on trains and in Palermo's markets.
- Booking ahead: for Christmas week and New Year, book your room and any Christmas or New Year's Eve meals early. Early November and January are the easiest times to find a last-minute deal.
- In churches: cover shoulders and knees. Services come first, especially on Sundays and on December 8, 24 and 25.
